OK, so "fear"...Sorry for getting back here so late.

OK, so "fear" in your suspense definition is a broad term meaning "concern for." Like "I'm afraid I'll run into loads of traffic on the freeway." Or "I forgot to bring a jacket and am afraid I'll be cold." Only this is reader concern for the character you've created. OK, I can buy that, definitely.

BTW, intended or not, that points out to me the importance of creating a character the reader cares about. Without that in place, then it seems the suspense will be lacking emotional impact.

Thanks for taking the time to expound on this, Brandilyn.

BeckyRebecca LuElla Millerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06823550402103559922noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583449.post-1161136794536171262006-10-17T18:59:00.000-07:002006-10-17T18:59:00.000-07:00thanks for the explanation, brandilyn. That's why I used Cast a Road Before Me. It's NOT suspense. It's women fiction. But it became a much better story for having the suspense elements added to it.

Should all stories have elements that keep the reader reading to see what happens? Sure. But too often, many stories don't have enough tension. I'm hoping that these thoughts of mine will help writers figure out how to better infuse some tension into their work.~ Brandilyn Collinshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04771812607327238979noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583449.post-1160801268877898212006-10-13T21:47:00.001-07:002006-10-13T21:47:00.001-07:00Great lesson...just what I needed for the work I w...Great lesson...just what I needed for the work I was trying to do.

I'm glad you're back 'teaching'...I always enjoy studying!Bonnie S. After reading over your post, though, I think I understand what you mean. Even romance has the suspense of will they get together or not. So, are you using suspense more in the sense of the reader wanting to keep reading to find out what happens, even if it is not a life or death situation? Shouldn't suspense of some kind be in any well-written story? roseAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583449.post-1160782351351800952006-10-13T16:32:00.000-07:002006-10-13T16:32:00.000-07:00WooHoo! Jack Cavanaugh uses the technique of a horribly long sentence, punctuated with plenty of commas and semicolons, during a high-action scene to convey a feeling of breathlessness. What do you think of this technique? I know it should be used sparingly (maybe an average of once per book), but would it still have a lulling affect?Katie Hart - Pinterest Managerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14892763965326103296noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-10583449.post-1160761524936866742006-10-13T10:45:00.000-07:002006-10-13T10:45:00.000-07:00Seems like this applies to all storytelling.
